Stage Door

Going to the Stage Door after a performance can often be the best way to complete your theater going experience.

Check out Broadway Informer’s etiquette tips below, we hope they help!

For specifics regarding the Newsies Stage Door, keep reading.

At the Nederlander, the “proper” stage door is at the gates by the doors with all of the Newsies signs on them, not the golden doors with windows. We recommend waiting at the gates rather than stalking the golden doors because the actors who come through the gated area are ready to sign and take pictures with you. When the actors go directly out the golden doors, they often have somewhere to go or somewhere to be. Respect the fact that they are normal people and sometimes need to leave the theatre without signing your playbill.

You don’t need to have a Sharpie ready to go at the Nederlander, but it’s helpful just in case. If you bring something special you want signed, make sure you have it out and ready to go when the actor(s) get to you. You don’t want to be awkwardly shuffling through Newsies trading cards while someone is signing your playbill.

Always have your camera or phone out and ready to go. Nelson and Francisco are two of the security detail at the Nederlander. If you ask them nicely, they will take pictures of you with the actors. If you get really attached to them, they’ll even get Kara Lindsay or another security guard to take a picture of them with you.

Try to know who the guys are in the show before hand. There are a lot of people in the show, so its not a bad thing if you don’t, but its always nice to know who you just talked to, rather than loudly whispering to the person next to you, “Who was that again?”

Feel free to chat with the actors as they come out. You’ll notice that they stop and talk to some people who frequent the show regularly. You too can be one of those people. Just make sure that you keep an eye on body language. If the actor starts edging past you, stop talking and let them go! They’ll appreciate it.

I also recommend using your fellow fansies for support. I’ve saved spots, passed Playbills, and taken pictures for many strangers – it’s one of the great things about this fandom, people in general are very, very kind! Don’t be afraid to ask someone who seems like a regular for help. (And you regulars, don’t forget to use your powers for good! Some of my favorite stage door memories involve helping small children get to the front or making sure someone got to meet their favorite actor!)

But just as you need to remember that the people who do not stage door “are normal people and sometimes need to leave the theatre without signing your playbill,” it’s equally as important to know that the people who DO come and sign are normal people as well. There is absolutely no need to be nervous or scared. It seems obvious, but it’s one of the best pieces of advice I received. Nothing will ruin a night at the theatre faster than not getting a picture with or autograph from your favorite actor just because you were too shy to ask! Gush. Tell them your one favorite thing they did you’ll always remember. Ask them for a quick photo (and be sure to make it quick!). Explain how much the show means to you. Offer them a handshake and properly introduce yourself (No, I am NOT joking.). I promise, if you think what you’re saying is embarrassing… I’ve probably said worse! 😛

And finally, BE EXCITED! You can tell from the actors’ faces that they never get tired of hearing how much people appreciate what they do. If you’re enthusiastic and friendly, they’ll treat you the same!

Shout your thoughts...we saved you a spot on the bill:
